Research : Christmas Stocking

Christmas stocking is an empty sock or sock-shaped bag that is hung on Christmas Eve so that Santa Claus (or Father Christmas) can fill it with small toyscandyfruitcoins or other small gifts when he arrives. These small items are often referred to as stocking stuffers or stocking fillers. In some Christmas stories, the contents of the Christmas stocking are the only toys the child receives at Christmas from Santa Claus; in other stories (and in tradition), some presents are also wrapped up in wrapping paper and placed under the Christmas treeTradition in Western culture dictates that a child who behaves badly during the year will receive only a piece of coal. However, coal is rarely if ever left in a stocking, as it is considered cruel. Some people even put their Christmas stocking by their bedposts so Santa Claus can fill it by the bed while they sleep.

Christmas Stockings

According to legend, a kindly nobleman grew despondent over the death of his beloved wife and foolishly squandered his fortune. This left his three young daughters without dowries and thus facing a life of spinsterhood.

The generous St. Nicholas, hearing of the girls' plight, set forth to help. Wishing to remain anonymous, he rode his white horse by the nobleman's house and threw three small pouches of gold coins down the chimney where they were fortuitously captured by the stockings the young women had hung by the fireplace to dry.

Research : Christmas Colours

Non-Traditional Christmas Colors

It’s that time of year when many of my posts will focus on chic and unique color ideas for Christmas!  So, be sure to check back often or subscribe so you won’t miss a thing!
Today, I’m starting with one of my custom wreaths.  I’ve made several different wreaths over the years and I make a new one {or two} each Christmas.  I’m actually running out of places to put them, so I end up giving them away as gifts.

Plum Spice & Ice is mostly a warm color combo but it also has a bit of a chill.  I mixed a toasty purple and spicy coppers with icy gray-blue to create an exotic look that also feels wintry.  Also, copper is a stylish, unexpected alternative to gold and silver.  I love using non-traditional colors for the holidays because it brings a real personal touch to our home.
Hurricane Sandy update:  Fortunately, here in central Maryland we escaped the worse.  We lost power for a couple of days but that was about it.  I feel very blessed and continue to pray for our neighbors to the north in New Jersey and New York.  All of our prayers can make a difference.  Also, please consider donating to the American Red Cross to help with relief efforts.

Who colour-coded Christmas?

The conventional colours of Christmas – red and green – are not, as many might suppose, a legacy of the Victorians. Instead, they hark back to the Middle Ages and perhaps even earlier, according to Cambridge research scientist Dr Spike Bucklow.
